Letters from our missionary in the Czech/Slovak Mission

“Czech”ing out 1st MTC week!

Ahoj a Dobrey Den!!!

So, I am officially on my fourth day in the MTC. It is crazy to think that I just got here on Wednesday, it feels like forever ago! For those of you who do not know, the MTC stands for missionary training center, and I am at the one in Provo Utah! I will be here for the next 9 weeks, learning the Czech language, and preparing to teach the velmi krasny people of the Ceska Rrepublika! There are about 1600 or so missionaries here right now, and we are supposed to be getting 800 more in a few weeks! So that will be crazy!!

The spirit is so strong here, we are basically walking on holy grounds all day, and I love it oh so much! I have learned a ton already. Literally the second you get here, they put you right to work! The moment I walked inside I got my name tag, and that made it feel really official. As a missionary I have the authority to represent Christ. To me I feel immensely grateful for this opportunity. It is a once in a life time thing, and I am striving to do my best to reflect him in all my actions.

We spend around 9 hours a day or so JUST studying the language. It is so beautiful. Most of their words are quite a mouthful to say, like “Co si myslite, ze znamena vytrvat do konce?” which means, what do you think enduring to the end means.(Plus a bunch of accents on the letters,I have not figured out how to switch my keyboard yet;)). But the spirit is so strong and I have felt it help me in understanding.

There are six other sestras going to the Czech Republic with me, and 3 strasis. We have such a great district! My companion is Sestra Valentine, and there is another Sestra Miller! So I am Sestra Miller 2 in class hahah.

We taught our first lesson to our investigator Tomas. It was so much fun. My companion and I were laughing so much and whispering in English a little. There were moments where I was like, should I just testify? Because he was not getting what we were saying, and she was like yes! So off I went! It was so cool and I think he liked what I said;) hopefully it came out alright!

We tried to get him to pray with us and he was very confused, so we knelt down and he just stared at us ! HAH! We were kneeling dwn for like 5 minutes and then I started talking again and slowly raised back up to sit in my chair because I didn’t want to be on the ground anymore looking like a goof haha. But all in all it was great and he is letting us come back! He spoke so so fast, but I got a good chunk of what he said! So I was pretty happy about that.

I know that this evangelium is true. I know it with all my heart, I am so happy to be a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I know the He lives, because I would not have been able to come this far, and be able to understand a fluent Czech speaker, with three days under my belt, if I did not have the spirit with me.

One of my favorite scriptures that I have studied this week is in Alma 37:36-37. It talks about how we should always turn to the Lord and have a relationship with him. Please take aminute to read it!

LOVE YOU ALL!!

Ahoj!!

Good morning everyone! I hope that you have all had a fantastic week, because I sure have!

It is so amazing being surrounded by so many people that have such a strong passion and love for both God and His evangelium (gospel). It has been so heart warming to think of him, learn of him, and teach about him, every single day. It is my very favorite thing to do!

This week was a whirlwind and so much has happened, it is kind of hard to keep all the days straight without having them blur together.

I spend practically all day studying the Czech language. 7:00am-9:00pm. It has been such a blessing to me. I have been able to see how much happiness the gospel not only brings me, but how much it blesses others too. So being able to learn how to express myself in another language so that I can share the impact that it has made for many of us, is so exciting!

During one of our lessons with Tomas we had the fire alarm go off during the very middle of it! We burst laughing and weren’t sure what to do, he still would not speak english, and he just looked at us. We did not know how to say okay we should exit the building so we just kinda ran out ahah. But after that our lessons grew better and better.

Our Czech speaking abilities improve more and more each day. I can truly feel the spirit working through me. I have witnessed it, and I know that the Holy Ghost is there to accompany you when you are reflecting Christ attributes.

During one hard lesson that we had, I was able to understand almost every single word that our investigator said, and it was such an amazing experience! I can never stop smiling! I love smiling, as most of you may know;) everything seems funnier in the mtc, so we sure do laugh a lot!

I got one of the starsi to try chocolate milk this week! ( crazy right?!?! I mean who does not like chocolate milk, let alone has never tried it before!) He loved it, and it gave me more confidence on how I can make something sound so good, so that others will desire it;)

I know this is a silly example, but it can be related to the gospel. So hang on with me here. I know that my Savior lives, and that he loves each and everyone of us. He gave us families and this gospel so that we could be happy and come back to live with him again. So when I go to the Czech Republic, I get to share this delectable glass of chocolate milk with others. It is so sweet and so good, I want to share it with everyone! Just one little sip at a time:)

My favorite scripture this week was 3 Nephi 22:13.It is sweet and simple, and I encourage you all to read it.

Thank you for your prayers and love, it means so much to me.

Angels Round About

Ahoj family and friends!

I am so thankful for this week. It has been the best one yet and it has just flown by! This last Sunday we were sitting in a devotional (all 2400 missionaries) and we had just finished watching an amazing video about developing Christlike attributes. Then the lights shut off and the spotlight came on… People started standing up and and then there are some screams, ELDER DAVID A. BEDNAR walks in!!!!! (For those of you who do not know, he is one of the 12 apostles) We were so excited. He did the best Q&A that I have ever been to in my life. He was able to address every thought and question that I had on my heart. That alone is so powerful to me. The spirit is real, and I know that statement is true, because their is no other way that something that special and unique could have happened to me without it. Some of the things that really stuck out to me that he mentioned were:

“We need to turn outward”
So often we find ourselves just caring about ourselves and turning inward. Each and every one of needs to develop the attribute of charity and love for others.

“Let his character become a part of you”
He is our Savior. He loves us so much and was the perfect example. As we strive to be more like Him, we will grow closer to Him.

“We are engaged in eternal work”
Serving as a missionary is the best decision that I have ever made. I get to share my love for the gospel that brings me ultimate happiness in my life with others. What is better than that?! I get to help others progress towards the eternal plan of happiness:)

Speaking a different language can be very challenging, especially going into it when you do not know anything. But that is exactly how life is. We are faced with trials every single day, and there is no reason to avoid them. They will all in the end BLESS us, CHANGE us, and help us grow closer to Him. Czech is beautiful and crazy! What a great combination;) it has helped me depend on the Lord. I could not do this without him.

We have 3 investigators that we are teaching multiple times every week in the language. I finally bore my testimony in one. It was such a tender mercy. One of my favorite moments yet. It was so simple and short, and I did not conjugate all my words correctly, but I could feel the spirit. Some times the very small things make the biggest impact, and I think that I was able to touch that member with the message that I had on my heart.

My favorite scripture this week is found in the Doctrine Covenants. It is in section 84:88.

“And whoso receiveth you, there I will be also, for I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up”

I love this. He will hold our hand. There are angels walking with you. When you feel alone, reach out to him, I promise you, that He is always there.

I love you all and hope that you have a great week!!!

PS: There is this awesome site called Dear Elder. You can send letters to missionaries on there, it is seriously the coolest thing if you want to try it out!

(Pictures: The blonde sister is such a great friend of mine! We worked together in the Seattle temple as ordinance workers before we left on our missions! She is going to Argentina:)  The second is of my companion and I, we were losing it yesterday, after 12 hours of language of study;) And then the third shows an accurate depiction of what studying does to you;) the gospel is so good!!!) The fourth is of a verse in Moroni, I just finished memorizing it!!!!)

Evengelium Je Pravda! (The Gospel is True!)

Ahoj everyone!

The days in the mtc feel like years, but the weeks just fly right by! I cannot believe that I have been serving as a missionary for almost a month now! 5 more weeks to go and I will be in the velmi krasny Czech Rebuplic! I am so excited:)

I do not have much time today, but one of the highlights I had was this last Sunday. I was in the choir along with half of the MTC, ahahah. We got to sing with Nashville Tribute Band. I had never heard of them before, but they are so amazing! The songs that they sing about Christ’s life just hits you in the heart. It was such a powerful devotional, I would highly suggest that you give them a hear:)

One thing that really stuck with me this week was a quote mention during one of our devotionals. “His words in mine heart”. So sweet and simple. I love this gospel and I know that it is true. And I can feel it burning within me. It brings so much happiness and love. It makes me eager to get out and share it with others!

I love the scripture Moroni 7:48. It tells us how we should pray with all energy of our heart. By doing so we will be purified in him.

If there is one thing that I have done a lot of in the mtc that is praying. It is such a blessing to have. Our Heavenly Father has given this to us so that we can communicate with us. He is only one prayer away!

I know that if I try my best, He will do the rest!

I love my investigators, even though they are fluent in Czech, I can feel the spirit so strongly! I am surrounded by such great inspirational people here.
We just got a new batch of Bulgarian missionaries this last Wednesday, so I am not the newbie anymore!!!! Woohoo;)

It is so exciting seeing new missionaries come in:) I got to help host this last Wednesday, and I can see the light of Christ in all of their eyes. Each person here has a desire to serve the Lord, and it is the best thing ever!

I hope you are all well!

Nashledanou.

Tailored to Thy Needs

Ahoj!

I hope that you all had a fantastic week! I had a very very long one, but it was filled with the spirit and lots of lessons that have helped me grow so much! So I have nothing to complain about;)

I reached my halfway mark in the MTC! I feel like I will never leave this place, but the time will come in exactly one month! Before I know it I will be on my way to the velmí krasný česka republíka!

This week we got to host new missionaries again, teach 6 lessons with some of our investigators, and meet with some return missionaries that served where I am going and listen to some of their experiences that they had!

I love the devotionals that we have each week. They always hit me in the heart, and somehow manage to answer every question and thought that is on my mind. They recharge me for the week, and give me that “I got this!” attitude. It is so nice to be a place that is continually filled with such a sweet spirit.

Some of my favorite things that were mentioned were:
“People cannot hear what is in your heart, so tell them!”
“Simply finish ever race.”- Allie Snider (Disabled swimmer)
“As you forget about yourself you will see what ‘they’ need”
“You can’t do what He did, but you can do as He did”

I know that this gospel is true with all my heart. And with the Lord on my side I can accomplish His will! Můžeme nasledovat přiklad Ježiše Krísta skrze vira v Pan. Anything is possible when have faith and put forth our best effort!

I love the scripture Helaman 15:7. It talks about how we can have a change of heart as we act on our faith.

I hope you all have a dobrý týden!

S Laskaou,

Sestra Miller
